Let’s get started

Adult controls use your existing toolkit PIN. No sound or speech is used.
Profiles and records stay in this browser on this device. Use initials or a nickname. Keep a Number Sense backup as well as your usual toolkit backup.
The six activities
How to use Number Sense
Begin with the initial skills check, or select a starting level for each activity. Use short teaching sessions to model, discuss and practise. Then use an independent check with no hints or adult prompting. Record help honestly using “I need help”.
The skills check samples six items at each level, stopping an activity at the first level that needs teaching. Six correct responses without help or interruption allow the next level. Pause whenever needed. It suggests a starting point; confirm understanding by asking the pupil to explain or show their answer with real objects, and by checking again on another day. It is not a standardised test or diagnosis.
Two completed independent checks with at least 5 of 6 correct at the same level can move the next session up one level, if automatic progression is enabled. Supported or interrupted checks never qualify. Use different everyday examples and check on another day before treating a skill as secure. Accuracy, understanding, access needs and wellbeing matter; response times alone do not measure ability.
For older pupils, use the same neutral counters and short instructions alongside age-appropriate real-life tasks. No age labels or competitive scores are shown.
Teaching principles: NCETM: cardinality and counting, composition, and EEF: early mathematics guidance. These sources inform the design; this app has not itself been evaluated as an intervention.

One step at a time
Add a pupil → Find their starting point → Start practising → See progress
Adult controls are unlocked. They lock when you enter pupil view.
3. Start practising
Choose one activity. Try a short practice together, then check what the pupil can do independently.
Ready for pupil view?
Adult controls will lock. You’ll need your PIN to return.
Adult settings
Change the plan, run a fresh starting check, or check independent work.
Levels: 1 — small quantities; 2 — within 10; 3 — within 20 (subitising uses grouped patterns within 10). Choose activities to include.
4. See progress
Separate teaching and independent accuracy. Compare like activities and levels. Times exclude hidden-tab or paused items and include reading, movement and device effects.
Back up or restore pupil records
Keep a safe copy
Number Sense records are separate from the main toolkit backup. Download this pupil’s JSON backup after important changes and keep it in your school’s approved secure storage. A download request does not confirm that a file was saved.
Copy or paste a backup instead
After requesting a backup, you can copy the JSON below into a text file and save it with a .json extension in approved secure storage.
Restore merges sessions into the selected pupil without deleting existing sessions or changing their plan. Check the pupil before merging. No PIN or other-tool data is exported.
