How can I teach before and after in short sequences?
Work out the order of three actions and check that every stated relation is satisfied.

Before and after: put it in order
A4 PDF · 2 pages · free · no sign-up
Print page 1 for learners and keep page 2 for adult guidance. Use A4 paper at Actual size or 100%.
Suggested years or grades help with selection; adapt to the learner's understanding.
Teaching aim
Use before and after to arrange three familiar actions.
Model and teach
Read: open the box before taking out a card; take out a card before closing the box. Order: open, take out, close. Check both clues.
Model one example, try another together, then give each learner a fresh turn. Keep the wording visible and allow usual communication or recording methods. In a group, ask everyone to think or show a response before sharing.
Activity prompts
- Draw a circle before a star. Draw a star before a square. First: __________ Next: __________ Last: __________
- Put on socks before shoes. Put on a coat after shoes. First: __________ Next: __________ Last: __________
- Close the lid after putting in a card. Open the box before putting in a card. First: __________ Next: __________ Last: __________
- Check this order: square, circle, star. Clues: circle before star; star before square. Fix it: __________
- Make two clues for a partner using clap, wave and point. Clue 1: __________________ Clue 2: __________________
Support and challenge
More support
Use two actions and picture or word cards. Keep the clues visible; do not make remembering the wording part of the task.
More challenge
Ask whether one clue alone fixes the whole order, and explain which action could still move.
Teacher answers and suggested responses
- Circle, star, square.
- Socks, shoes, coat. These clues define this puzzle, not a required dressing routine.
- Open box, put in card, close lid.
- Circle, star, square satisfies both clues.
- Check that the two clues produce an order with no contradiction; accept any valid sequence.
Check understanding
Solve a fresh sequence and check each relation against the final order.
Note the example, response and extra adult help: independent with agreed supports, general prompt, or model/specific clue. Compare similar tasks with the same supports. These observations guide teaching and are not diagnostic scores.
