Choose tools for the task

A4 PDF · 2 pages · free · no sign-up

Print page 1 for learners and keep page 2 for adult guidance. Use A4 paper at Actual size or 100%.

Suggested years or grades help with selection; adapt to the learner's understanding.

Teaching aim

Choose equipment by relating it to what the task requires.

Model and teach

Task: draw a straight line 8 cm long. Choose a ruler marked in centimetres and a pencil. Explain why scissors are not needed for this outcome.

Model one example, try another together, then give each learner a fresh turn. Keep the wording visible and allow usual communication or recording methods. In a group, ask everyone to think or show a response before sharing.

Activity prompts

  1. Task: measure the length of a book in centimetres. Choose: ruler / glue / pencil / counters. My choices and reasons: __________
  2. Task: attach a paper label to an empty cardboard box. Choose: glue / paper label / ruler / box. My choices and reasons: __________
  3. Task: show 4 + 3 using objects, then record the total. Choose: counters / pencil / paper / glue. My choices and reasons: __________
  4. Task: make a labelled drawing of a leaf. Choose useful materials. Explain how each helps: __________________
  5. My own classroom task: __________________________ I need: __________ My first action: __________ Ready check: __________

Support and challenge

More support

Offer two safe, familiar items. Name the outcome and ask which item helps with that outcome.

More challenge

Change one task requirement and explain whether the equipment list must change.

Teacher answers and suggested responses
  1. A ruler marked in centimetres; pencil/paper or another recording method if the result must be recorded.
  2. The label, box and suitable glue. A ruler is optional only if placement or size must be measured.
  3. Seven counters and a way to record, such as pencil and paper. Glue is unnecessary.
  4. A leaf or clear reference and a drawing/recording method. Other choices need a task-related reason.
  5. Accept choices linked to the actual outcome and an achievable first action.

Check understanding

On a comparable task, select useful materials and explain a choice with less additional adult help.

Note the example, response and extra adult help: independent with agreed supports, general prompt, or model/specific clue. Compare similar tasks with the same supports. These observations guide teaching and are not diagnostic scores.
