How can I teach children to work out word meanings from context?

Read the surrounding sentence, propose a meaning and test whether it fits the passage. Context provides clues, but uncertain meanings still need discussion or a suitable dictionary.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.

Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.

How to use this resource

  1. Read the original passage once for overall meaning.
  2. Return to each target word and underline or point to a helpful clue.
  3. Try a replacement meaning in the sentence, then confirm or refine it.

Make it easier or add challenge

More support

Read the passage aloud and offer two plausible meanings for one word. Ask which fits the scene.

More challenge

Find another context in which the same word has a different meaning and explain the difference.

What to look for

Can the child connect a proposed meaning to a specific clue? A correct guess without an explanation may need further checking.

Teacher answers and suggested responses

narrow: not wide; walking one behind another is a clue.

paused: stopped briefly; she checks the map before continuing.

faint: quiet or not easy to hear in this context.

reluctant: not keen or willing; she does not want to leave until she knows more.

Accept reasoned approximate meanings, then refine them using discussion or a suitable dictionary.

Printing, access and sharing

Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
