How can I teach children to explore line and pattern in art?
Vary one choice such as direction, spacing or repetition and compare its visual effect. The activity gives room to experiment without requiring every child to reproduce one model.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.
Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.
How to use this resource
- Demonstrate a short repeated line unit and name the choice being varied.
- Try contrasting patterns in the boxes.
- Choose one experiment and explain how the lines create its effect.
Make it easier or add challenge
More support
Explore two contrasting choices with a comfortable drawing tool or a larger sheet.
More challenge
Combine two line choices deliberately and explain how the combination changes emphasis or movement.
What to look for
Can the child identify a deliberate choice and its effect? Neatness and symmetry are not compulsory success criteria.
Teacher answers and suggested responses
Open-ended. Look for a deliberate change between boxes, such as close versus wide spacing or curved versus straight lines.
An effective reflection names a choice and its effect. Neatness, symmetry or a particular emotional interpretation is not required.
A useful next step
Printing, access and sharing
Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
