How can I teach children to measure lengths accurately in centimetres?
Align the ruler's zero mark with one endpoint, keep the ruler straight and read the other endpoint in centimetres. This printable needs Actual size printing and a ruler check before use.

Download: Measure and compare
A4 PDF · 2 pages · free · no sign-up
Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.
Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.
Check the 5 cm calibration line with a ruler before use. Do not choose Fit to page: it changes the measurements.
How to use this resource
- Print at 100% or Actual size and check the 5 cm calibration line with a ruler.
- Model aligning zero rather than the edge of the ruler with a line's start.
- Measure the lines, record units and compare the lengths.
Make it easier or add challenge
More support
Measure one line together with the ruler held in place, then let the child explain the endpoint.
More challenge
Estimate first, measure and calculate a difference between two lengths.
What to look for
Does the child align zero and include the unit? If the calibration is wrong, reprint before interpreting answers.
Teacher answers and suggested responses
Lines 1-4: 6, 3, 8, 5 cm.
Longest: line 3. Shortest: line 2.
Line 3 is 5 cm longer than line 2.

Printing, access and sharing
Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
