How can I teach multiplication using known facts and doubling?
Use a fact the child understands to work out a related one. These cards explore the 3, 4 and 8 times tables through relationships such as doubling a four-times fact to find an eight-times fact.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.
Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.
How to use this resource
- Choose a card and name a fact already known.
- Show the relationship with an array, counters or a clear calculation.
- Explain the method to a partner and compare another correct strategy.
Make it easier or add challenge
More support
Keep one strategy visible and work with smaller facts and counters.
More challenge
Find two routes to the same answer and discuss which uses fewer steps for that example.
What to look for
Can the child explain why doubling a fact works? A correct answer alone does not show that the relationship is understood.
Teacher answers and suggested responses
3 x 6 = 18.
4 x 7 = 28.
8 x 4 = 32.
3 x 9 = 27.
4 x 8 = 32; multiplication of these whole numbers is commutative.
8 x 6 = 48; for example double 4 x 6.

Printing, access and sharing
Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
