How can I help children choose a calculation for a word problem?
Ask what is happening to the quantities before choosing an operation. A drawing or short explanation can show whether a problem combines, compares or removes amounts.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.
Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.
How to use this resource
- Read a problem aloud and identify the known quantities and the question.
- Model the situation with a sketch or objects before writing an equation.
- Solve, then explain why the answer fits the story.
Make it easier or add challenge
More support
Work with one problem and concrete objects, leaving the written calculation until the situation is clear.
More challenge
Write a different story for the same calculation or explain why another operation would answer a different question.
What to look for
Can the child justify the operation through the situation? Avoid relying on one keyword as a universal rule.
Teacher answers and suggested responses
1. 18 + 7 = 25 pencils.
2. 24 - 9 = 15 glue sticks.
3. 6 x 4 = 24 children.
4. 20 / 5 = 4 stickers each.
5. 15 - 9 = 6 cm.
6. 3 x 8 = 24 cards.

Printing, access and sharing
Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
