How can I use a reading log without making reading a competition?
Record a few meaningful reading experiences and use them for conversation. This log makes room for responses without a minutes target, family signatures or a race to finish the most books.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.
Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.
How to use this resource
- Explain that shared and school-based reading can be included.
- Model a short response about an event, idea or interesting word.
- Use an entry to discuss choices and suggest something the child may enjoy next.
Make it easier or add challenge
More support
Accept a picture, adult-scribed comment or response to shared reading.
More challenge
Compare two reading experiences and explain how the authors treated a similar idea differently.
What to look for
Does an entry give a useful starting point for discussion? Entry counts do not measure reading attainment.
Teacher answers and suggested responses
Open-ended. Responses might identify an interesting event, describe an idea, ask a question or notice a word in context.
Do not mark the number of entries as a reading-attainment measure. Pupils have different reading access and home circumstances.
A useful next step
Printing, access and sharing
Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
