How can I teach children to design for a user's needs?

Start with what a user needs to do, then choose features that address that need. A design planner helps connect a drawing to a purpose instead of judging appearance alone.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.

Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.

How to use this resource

  1. Agree a fictional or general user and a manageable design problem.
  2. Identify useful features and sketch a possible solution with labels.
  3. Explain how the features meet the need and choose one improvement.

Make it easier or add challenge

More support

Provide one clear need and compare two possible features before drawing.

More challenge

Discuss a trade-off, such as size versus portability, and revise the design to address it.

What to look for

Can the child link a feature to the user's need? A neat drawing is not sufficient evidence of a useful design.

Teacher answers and suggested responses

Open-ended. Example need: keeping bookmarks together. Criteria might be that bookmarks are easy to find and do not fall out during ordinary use.

A suitable review checks those criteria; attractive decoration alone does not establish that the design works.

A useful next step

Printing, access and sharing

Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
