How can I teach children to sort shapes by their properties?

Choose a clear sorting rule and check every shape against it. Discussing the rule helps children attend to properties rather than colour, size or a familiar orientation.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.

Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.

How to use this resource

  1. Look at all the cards and describe visible features.
  2. Agree one rule, sort the cards and explain a difficult choice.
  3. Change the rule and discuss which shapes move.

Make it easier or add challenge

More support

Sort a small selection into two groups with a shared example in each.

More challenge

Use two properties together and explain where a shape satisfying both belongs.

What to look for

Can the child state a consistent rule and apply it to a rotated shape? Accept a different valid sort when it is explained.

Teacher answers and suggested responses

By shape: circles A,D,G,J; squares B,E,H,K; triangles C,F,I,L.

By drawn size: small A-F; large G-L.

Other explained rules are possible. A card can belong to a shape group and a size group when those sets overlap.

A useful next step

Printing, access and sharing

Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
