How can I organise group work so everyone contributes?

Give roles that support a shared task while keeping everyone involved in the thinking. Rotate and adapt responsibilities so one child is not always recording, collecting or reporting.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.

Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.

How to use this resource

  1. Explain the shared learning goal before assigning roles.
  2. Agree how each role helps, combine roles for smaller groups and allow accessible ways to contribute.
  3. Review both the outcome and whose ideas were included.

Make it easier or add challenge

More support

Use two clearly defined roles in a short paired task and model a useful contribution.

More challenge

Let the group revise its role allocation after reviewing which responsibilities were missing or uneven.

What to look for

Can each member explain some of the learning? Completing a job alone does not show participation in the shared thinking.

Teacher answers and suggested responses

Open-ended. All roles should support the shared task and allow everyone to contribute ideas.

With fewer than four pupils, combine roles by agreement. With more, share a role and define each person's contribution.

A useful next step

Printing, access and sharing

Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
