How can I teach children what a historical source can and cannot tell us?
Ask what the source directly shows or states, who created it and what remains uncertain. These clearly simulated sources let children practise the distinction without treating classroom inventions as authentic evidence.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.
Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.
How to use this resource
- Read the simulated poster and caption and establish their dates and forms.
- Identify a direct statement from each and an unanswered question.
- Discuss what other source might help answer that question.
Make it easier or add challenge
More support
Work with the poster first and sort two statements into supported and not established.
More challenge
Compare the purposes of an advertisement and a later image caption, then explain why each has limits.
What to look for
Can the child explain that an advertised event is not proof of attendance? Keep the simulated status explicit.
Teacher answers and suggested responses
The poster advertises a Saturday opening at 10 am and toy borrowing. It does not prove how many visitors came or how long the library stayed open.
The simulated caption describes shelves and a repair table in 2026. It does not prove that repairs were successful or that the 2010 service continued without a break.

Printing, access and sharing
Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
