How can I teach children to order events on a timeline?

Use dates to establish earlier and later, then calculate intervals between events. This invented garden history separates chronological order from explanations of why changes happened.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.

Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.

How to use this resource

  1. Read the dated events and find the earliest and latest.
  2. Arrange the cards in date order and add them to a timeline.
  3. Calculate the requested intervals by comparing dates.

Make it easier or add challenge

More support

Order three events first and discuss earlier, later and between before calculating.

More challenge

Construct a scaled version on separate paper and explain how equal time intervals affect spacing.

What to look for

Can the child distinguish the number of events from elapsed years? The timeline does not provide causes for the changes.

Teacher answers and suggested responses

Date order: B (2018), D (2019), F (2020), A (2022), C (2024), E (2026).

First event: planning in 2018. Eight years from 2018 to 2026. The bench was added two years before the extra bed. Reasons for the changes are not supplied.

A useful next step

Printing, access and sharing

Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
