Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.

Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.

How to use this resource

  1. Read all the sentence cards.
  2. Sort them by topic and explain why each belongs.
  3. Arrange each group into a paragraph, choose or write a topic sentence and reread for flow.

Make it easier or add challenge

More support

Supply the two topic headings and sort a few cards together before independent choices.

More challenge

Rewrite a transition or add a relevant sentence, then explain how it connects to the paragraph's main idea.

What to look for

Can the child explain a sentence's connection to the topic? Judge coherence rather than a fixed number of sentences.

Teacher answers and suggested responses

Looking after books: B, C, G. Choosing a book: A, D, F.

E is unrelated to either topic.

Possible topic sentences: We can take care of shared books in several ways. / Choosing a book is easier when we explore what interests us.

A useful next step

Printing, access and sharing

Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
