How can I help children write a complete sentence?

Start with a short sentence the child can explain aloud, arrange its words in a meaningful order, and then add the capital letter and full stop. This worksheet gives six word groups to turn into complete sentences.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.

Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.

How to use this resource

  1. Read one group of words together. Ask who or what the sentence is about and what happens.
  2. Move copied word cards until the sentence makes sense; read it back before writing.
  3. Complete the remaining examples, then choose one to read to a partner and check.

Make it easier or add challenge

More support

Use the shortest example with movable word cards. Write the capital letter and full stop separately for the child to place.

More challenge

Add a detail about where or when, then explain why the new words belong in that position.

What to look for

Can the child read back a sentence that uses all the words and makes sense? Check meaning separately from handwriting.

Teacher answers and suggested responses

Printing, access and sharing

Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
