How can I help children organise facts for non-fiction writing?

Choose a focused topic, gather facts from suitable sources and group notes under meaningful headings. Recording where a fact came from makes checking and later writing easier.

A4 PDF · 2 pages · free · no sign-up

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.

Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.

How to use this resource

  1. Agree a manageable question and provide suitable source material.
  2. Model one short note in the child's own words and record its source.
  3. Sort the remaining notes under headings and identify a missing fact to investigate.

Make it easier or add challenge

More support

Provide one short source and two headings. Allow drawings or adult scribing while the child chooses the facts.

More challenge

Compare two sources, resolve a difference and explain why one fact is useful for the chosen question.

What to look for

Can each note be traced to a source and placed under a relevant heading? Separate opinions from factual claims.

Teacher answers and suggested responses

Open-ended. Check whether notes answer the chosen question, belong under the headings and can be traced to a suitable source.

A model topic could be classroom scissors: describe their purpose, name the main parts and compare suitable examples under adult guidance. No personal information is needed.

A useful next step

Printing, access and sharing

Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
