How can I help children plan and check classroom work?
Turn the task into a concrete first step and agree what successful completion will look like. A plan-do-check sheet is useful when it helps children begin, monitor and review an actual task.

Print page 1 for the activity and keep page 2 for teaching notes and answers or suggested responses.
Use A4 paper at 100% or Actual size. Choose by the task and your class; the suggested range is a starting point, not a curriculum-alignment claim.
How to use this resource
- Choose one real lesson task and model a brief plan.
- Record the first action, useful materials and where help is available.
- Complete the task, compare it with the goal and decide what to revise.
Make it easier or add challenge
More support
Provide a first-step choice and check in after that step before planning more.
More challenge
Ask the child to identify which part of the plan helped and change it for the next task.
What to look for
Can the child begin from the stated first step and check evidence of the learning goal? A full planner is not the goal itself.
Teacher answers and suggested responses
Open-ended. A first step should be concrete enough to begin, such as choose two facts, not do the work.
A completion check should refer to the learning goal, not simply a full page or an adult's approval.
A useful next step
Printing, access and sharing
Allow drawing, discussion, practical materials or usual communication tools where they support the learning aim. Use separate paper if a child needs more writing or drawing space.
